Q: What is counseling?
A: Counseling is an opportunity for you to understand and resolve the underlying issue(s) that may be the cause of problematic behaviors. It gives you the space to discuss your problems with someone who is an objective listener who then uses their training and experience to help you develop a solution. A counselor will not tell you what to do or fix your problem for you. They will help and guide you through the process, teaching you the necessary skills to overcome current and future challenges.
Q: How do I know if I need counseling?
A: There are many things that can lead a person to seek help. Perhaps you have noticed a need or someone has suggested it. Here are some common indicators that you may want to talk with a professional counselor:
• emotional difficulties (sadness, anger, anxiousness etc.)
• relationship problems
• difficulty sleeping
• declining academic or job performance
• a recent traumatic event or loss
• concerns about substance abuse
• difficulty functioning on a day-to-day basis
• self-injury or suicidal thoughts/behaviors*

Q: Can I use my insurance to pay for couples or marriage counseling?
A: Each insurance company is different, and each plan under that company differs. You must check with your plan to be certain. Typically, couples/marriage counseling in the traditional sense is not covered by insurance plans. The details are complex and cannot be fully explored here. We recommend that you contact your insurer to inquire about coverage and what it entails. You can expect to pay out of pocket for traditional couple/marriage therapy.
