Evaluation & Testing Services for Adults

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

At Compassion & Healing Counseling, we never assume that every symptom that looks like ADHD or ASD is proof of those conditions. Our evaluation and testing services are conducted by licensed and trained clinicians with several years of experience in the evaluation and treatment of ADHD and ASD. Our evaluation and subsequent testing for adults is comprehensive and designed to provide clients with clearer insight into their concerns.

Our evaluation and testing are conducted over several appointments and include:

Session 1 Comprehensive Intake - We leave no stone unturned in reviewing your biological, psychological, social, and medical history. You will complete a series of brief screenings designed to assess you in several areas to determine all possible diagnoses, including those that mimic ADHD or ASD. If we find significant evidence to suggest ADHD or ASD we will schedule you for further evaluation and testing. If we believe another condition might be more likely, we will discuss this with you and provide recommendations for treatment.

Session 2 ADHD or ASD-Specific Structured Interview - During the structured interview, we meet with you and one or more informants who can provide significant insight into your early development or current behaviors and experiences. Informants may attend in-person, virtually, or complete and return forms to our practice. You may also complete brief disorder-specific assessments during the appointment.

Session 3 Neuropsychological Testing -  During your testing appointment, you'll complete a battery of standardized neuropsychological tests to assess your cognitive functioning, or social communication and interaction skills. Our evaluations for ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) use gold-standard, evidence-based methods to ensure accurate, reliable, and meaningful results. These tests may be computerized or directly administered by the clinician.

Session 4 Diagnosis Feedback -  We incorporate our comprehensive clinical interviews, standardized assessments, and objective measures backed by the latest research in psychological testing. During this session, we will discuss our findings and treatment recommendations and provide you with a comprehensive written report.

With years of specialized experience in neurodivergent assessments, we are committed to providing thorough, compassionate, and scientifically grounded evaluations that offer clarity and direction. Whether you're seeking a diagnosis for the first time or need a second opinion, our process is designed to empower you with answers, resources, and a deeper understanding of yourself.

Important Information About Payment for Evaluation & Testing Services

We offer affordable self-pay rates for evaluation & testing services.

Each insurance company and plan under that company offers different levels of coverage or may not cover testing for ADHD and ASD. Insurance plans who do offer coverage sometimes require that testing be “medically necessary” and may require a referral, or pre-authorization before testing can be performed. We encourage all clients who desire to use their insurance to pay for testing services to contact their plan to get specific information about coverage. Use this guide below when calling to ensure you are asking the right questions:

Does my specific plan cover neuropsychological evaluations and testing for an ADHD or ASD diagnosis?

If so:

· Does my plan require pre-authorization?

· Does my plan require a referral from a primary care physician (PCP) or primary care manager (PCM)?

· What specific types of assessments/tests are covered?

· Are there any documentation requirements beforehand?

· What is my plan’s definition of “medical necessity” for ADHD or ASD testing

· Are there any limitations on the number of testing sessions covered?

· What is my copay or coinsurance for evaluation and testing for ADHD or ASD?

Understanding ADHD and Autism in Adults

Prevalence, Symptoms, and Benefits of Diagnosis

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are neurodevelopmental conditions commonly associated with childhood. However, they also significantly affect adults, many of whom remain undiagnosed. Recognizing the prevalence, identifying symptoms, and understanding the advantages of obtaining a diagnosis can greatly enhance the quality of life for adults with these conditions.

Prevalence in Adults

  • ADHD: In 2023, approximately 6.0% of U.S. adults, equating to 15.5 million individuals, had a current ADHD diagnosis. Notably, about half of these diagnoses were made during adulthood, indicating a substantial number of late-identified cases (Brooke et al., 2024).
  •  Autism: Estimates from 2017 suggest that around 2.21% of U.S. adults, or roughly 5.4 million individuals, are living with ASD (CDC, 2024).

Reasons for Undiagnosed Cases

Many adults with ADHD or ASD remain undiagnosed due to factors such as:

  • Historical Focus on Children: Diagnostic criteria and public awareness have traditionally centered on children, leading to missed diagnoses in adults.
  • Symptom Masking: Particularly in females, individuals may develop coping mechanisms that conceal symptoms, making detection more challenging.
  • Evolving Diagnostic Criteria: Understanding of these disorders has advanced over time, and earlier diagnostic frameworks may not have encompassed the full spectrum of presentations, especially in adults.

Common Symptoms in Adults

  • ADHD: Adults may experience difficulties with sustained attention, organization, time management, impulsivity, restlessness, and challenges in maintaining focus on tasks.
  • Autism: Symptoms can include challenges with social interactions, preference for routines, intense focus on specific interests, sensory sensitivities, and difficulties in understanding social cues.

Benefits of Diagnosis

Obtaining a formal diagnosis in adulthood can offer several advantages:

  • Self-Understanding: A diagnosis provides clarity, helping individuals make sense of past experiences and behaviors.
  •  Access to Support and Resources: It enables access to tailored therapies, support groups, and workplace accommodations, facilitating better management of the condition.
  •  Improved Mental Health: Recognizing and addressing the disorder can reduce feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression that often accompany undiagnosed conditions.
  •  Enhanced Relationships and Productivity: Understanding one's neurodivergence can lead to improved interpersonal relationships and more effective strategies for handling professional responsibilities.
